Is my Rat poorly?

The best preventative measure is to check your rats every day as signs of being unwell may be subtle. Let us know if you notice

  • Overgrooming
  • Increased aggression in a normally placid rat
  • Sneezing, wheezing or irregular breathing
  • Weight loss or sudden weight gain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Eating less
  • Avoiding social contact, looking withdrawn,
  • Discharge from the eyes or nose
  • Wobbliness
diet
  • A complete rat food
  • Small amounts of fruit, veg/cooked egg/grains and seeds
  • Fresh clean water refilled twice daily with multiple bottles
  • Harmful foods include citrus, onion, walnuts, grapes, raisins and chocolate
  • Keep food in open ceramic bowls and remove uneaten food before refilling, and more than one bowl if multiple rats to prevent competition
  • Mix food items among fresh bedding to encourage foraging
  • A whole unpeeled cooled egg
Environment
  • Gnawing is important to keep their teeth level, offer untreated wooden items, dog bisuits or fruit wood branches such as apple wood
  • Rats should always live with other rats for company
  • Provide places to hide from each other
  • Handle gently with treats as rewards in the morning or evening as they will sleep during the day
